Introduction

TAssist is a system ideated for a month and a half long project for the class User Centered Research and Evaluation. The project required us to perform a Contextual Inquiry and learn and demonstrate the various steps involved in one to come up with an idea.

Our target audience was students who took the class - Introduction of Computer Systems (a basic programming class). This class enrolls over 100 students and has a group of TAs who help the professor drive it along. Our aim was to find a major problem in the way things are done currently and suggest an idea that would improve the environment with respect to the students.

Observations and Interpretations

We observed programmers (students) while they were finishing a coding assignment. I interviewed an ECE Masters student. I recorded any issues he faced and specific characteristics about how he went on with the assignment. We, as a team, also observed the office hours and the student - TA communication for this class.

Affinity Diagramming

We gathered all our observations of our seperate interview sessions and made an affinity diagram to see any commonalities between all the students.

Sequence Diagrams

We went over each of our interviews and jotted down sequences of events that migh be valuable to us. We marked breakdowns and insights for all these sequence models.

Flow Diagrams

We created flow models showing the flow of information and data between all the people and artifacts involved.

Sequence Model Consolidation

We went over frequently occuring sequences from all our sequence models and combined them all into one big sequence model to help give us better insights.

Flow Model Consolidation

We combined information flow from all our flow models and created one big flow model showcasing everything.

Visioning

We looked at our consolidated models and affinity diagram and marked design ideas, key issues and questions on each.

We used these to sketch out visions of how to make the current system work more efficiently. Based on the visions we came up with, we selected one to pursue and that influenced our final idea.

Idea Presentation

This was our final idea. We chose to improve how the office hours were being held and thus improve communication between TAs and students of that class. Here is our final presentation involving the idea pitch.

Here is a video sketch of our idea - TAssist.
